Prepared foods are often multi-ingredient products which typically require minimum preparation. 'Consumer-ready foods' such as pizza, sandwiches, ready-meals, etc. fall into the category of prepared foods.  These products are often high value which leads consumers to demand high quality (and shelf life), appearance, taste and the frequent introduction of new variants. The catering industry has always been challenged to deliver fresh, fine foods of the highest quality.  Last-minute production is often required to meet these demands.  In most cases this is an inefficient and very expensive way to operate.
