Refrigerant Grade CO2 (R744)
Refrigerant grade CO2 (R744) is a high-purity gas with a moisture content of less than 10 parts per million.
Refrigeration CO2 systems require tight controls on moisture, oil and other impurities.
Industrial grade CO2 does not meet this requirement.
Please read our factsheet on CO2 as a refrigerant, or see below for a summary.
Summary of CO2 as a refrigerant (R744)
The use of CO2 as a refrigerant dates back to 1850. R744 is now regaining popularity due to its low environmental impact.
Excellent thermodynamic properties and low energy-use make it suitable for a range of applications, including:
- industrial heat extraction
- chilled warehousing
- shipping vessels
- commercial refrigeration
- mobile air conditioning
R744 is often used as a secondary refrigerant along with ammonia and hydrocarbons, thereby opening up applications where ammonia or hydrocarbons as a single-stage refrigerant would not be applicable.
Properties
- environmentally friendly. Zero ODP, GWP = 1
- non-flammable
- toxic and an asphyxiant at high concentrations
- odourless and colourless
Refrigerant grade CO2 is available in a variety of cylinder sizes and drums. Our most popular sizes are shown in the table below.
| BOC Part No | Large 34kg | Small 7 kg |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid | 159913-L | 159914-V |
| Vapour | 161010-L | 161011-V |
This is also available through BOC's Cryospeed™ mini-bulk delivery, and bulk up to 22 tonnes, available from locations across the country.
