Laboratory Gases Safety Workshop
This 3½-hour workshop is designed to help laboratory staff improve their knowledge and awareness of the compressed gases used within their particular working environment.
Participants will identify the hazards associated with the products, will learn safe working practices and ultimately leave the course with an enhanced ability to assess risk.
Delegates will also gain an understanding of relevant legislation, standards and codes of practice.
Workshop objectives
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
- correctly identify gas cylinders
- recognise how cylinders operate
- be aware of the hazards of asphyxia
- be aware of the hazards posed by cryogenic liquids
- recognise the hazards posed by oxygen enrichment
- identify flammability hazards
- select the correct gas control equipment
- recognise the hazards of using incorrect manual handling techniques
- re-assess current storage facilities in line with safe working practices
- introduce safe working practices into their working environment

- anyone using, handling, storing or transporting cylinder gases in a laboratory environment
- laboratory and other managers with operational responsibilities for safety
- managers, supervisors and staff from all functions who are responsible for the safe use of gases within their department
