- What size vessel do I need?
-
The basic criteria are twofold – the amount of gas you need for your process and the size and frequency of deliveries which we can economically make. Bear in mind that the more efficient and cost-effective our operation can be; the better deal we can offer to you. Key factors to consider are your required flow rate and your gas demand (whether it is steady or fluctuating), together with the peaks and troughs in your business.
This tool will outline the vessel configuration you are likely to need with just a few inputs. Then, when you are ready, BOC will work with you to finalise the optimum installation tailored to your requirements. At the end of this, you will have an understanding of:
- The scale and outline dimensions of a potential installation
- The capability of the installation
- Your site preparation considerations
- How to contact BOC to fully customise your installation
Remember, BOC have the widest selection of tanks available, along with the largest fleet of delivery vehicles to ensure security of supply. When you buy BOC, you buy the biggest name and best resources in the business.
- What is a cryogenic storage vessel?
-
The cryogenic vessel is designed for the supply of gaseous or cryogenic liquid to your production process. BOC can supply a cryogenic vessel to deliver nitrogen, pure argon, oxygen, or carbon dioxide gas.
In essence, it is constructed in a similar way to a vacuum insulated flask. We have more information on our Cryogenic Storage vessel page.
- What is a vaporiser?
-
A vaporiser is required to match your flow rate If you want a gaseous supply. Which type we recommend will depend on your flow rate at your peak requirement.
For lower flow rates, we fit an ambient vaporiser, which relies simply on the ambient air temperature to convert the liquid into gas. An ambient vaporiser clearly needs negligible maintenance and costs nothing to run. The size of the ambient vaporiser increases with flow rate requirements. For higher flow demands, a steam heated water bath vaporiser may be an option.
You will be given an indication using this configurator tool. This will then be confirmed with your BOC expert.
- How is the gas delivered?
- The gas is delivered as a cryogenic liquid (-196C for nitrogen). BOC deliver using a fleet of trucks ranging from an 18 tonne rigid to a 42 tonne articulated bulk tanker. The driver will transfer the cryogenic liquid into your tank without interruption to your business. BOC typically deliver 24/7 all year round.
- What space do I need?
-
You will need space for the storage vessel and vaporiser as well as adequate access for our regular vehicles to deliver product.
You will be given an indication using this configurator tool.
Remember for larger installations, a crane will be required during the installation. Our experts at BOC will happily assist you throughout the whole installation process.

- Site preparation
-
Before we can install the vessel at your site, a certain amount of preparation work has to be undertaken. The site has to be chosen and measured. Access roads have to be looked at to make sure that our tankers can use them and that there is adequate turning space.
Finally, some legal work will be necessary to make sure there are no covenants which need to be observed. Once all these preliminaries are out of the way, unless only small mini tanks are required, a concrete plinth is required to take the weight of the filled vessel, with an adjacent hardstanding for our tanker to park when it arrives to deliver your gas. Open mesh fencing and 180° opening access gates may also be required. The specification of the concrete plinth and fencing will be completed when final requirements are confirmed.
There will need to be specific consideration to allow for:
- Delivery tanker access to the installation
- Proximity to buildings
- Proximity to other gases stored
- Proximity to other public amenities, such as roads and railways
You will need to check whether a planning application will be required. Our experts at BOC will happily assist you throughout the whole installation process.
