In-Transit Refrigeration

Maintaining the temperature of food products within the cold-chain, from the producer to the end customer, is of paramount importance in maintaining both quality and safety. A cryogenic agent such as liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) can be used to achieve the required temperature during transportation, for both fresh and frozen food.

The BOC solution: Snowcool

BOC offers transport cooling via trolleys through the Snowcool application.
Snowcool offers the following advantages:

  • fast and flexible
  • exact fixing of the temperature
  • inert atmosphere
  • no CFCs
  • noiseless operation
  • low maintenance
  • low investment

Application and use

  • insulated 'thermo containers' are used for the transport of temperature-controlled foodstuffs
in thermo containers, a snow box is installed for the intake of CO2 snow
  • dosage is fully automatic and is specified by presetting various parameters
  • foodstuffs remain at a stable temperature during transport
  • this new cooling process offers a rapid supply of cooling energy in the form of CO2 snow which is accurately measured to meet the required cooling demand
  • the coolant can be supplied at any given time by withdrawal from a stationary CO2 tank
  • special training is not required to operate the SNOWCOOL® installation

Benefits

  • container-specific cooling demand as a product of the average surface and the k-value (W/K)
  • refrigerating capacity of CO2 snow at -20°C and/or 4°C (Wh/kg)
  • average throughput rate in the nozzle tube (kg/s)
  • target temperature presetting; frozen foods -20°C, fresh produce 4°C
  • temperature maintenance in the cold chain during the entire cooling period
  • high economic efficiency due to adjusted CO2 consumption
  • cooling energy available any time
  • easy operation
  • no increased CO2 concentration at the workplace; CO2 gas is vented
  • low required space; wall-mounted or mounted on customer-provided carrier plate

Our Capabilities

  • A simulated Snowcool system can be tested at the Food Technology Centre at Thame in Oxfordshire.
  • Here a 'Try Before You Buy' trial can be arranged, with no obligation, to test and simulate production processes to a high level of accuracy, ensuring the best fit of application to your needs.
