The unique requirements surrounding knee and hip joints are largely responsible for the trend towards the use of more novel materials such as titanium powders. This in turn has lead to the growth of more advanced manufacturing processes such as laser metal deposition (additive manufacturing) and plasma spraying.
BOC Gases Ireland works closely with manufacturers to support the optimisation of their manufacturing processes and implement new technologies that incorporate gas using processes. With the largest production and distribution network in Ireland, our security of supply and quality controls are leading.
Additive manufacturing – improving bio-compatibility
Processes using titanium have increased significantly in recent years, thanks to it's durability and bio-compatibility.
The process uses laser sintering to build titanium parts in layers, melting the metal powder with a laser beam to the layer below.
BOC supply the specialist gases required to generate the laser light, all of which are produced at ISO 9002 accredited facilities to the highest quality. In addition, we supply the process assist gases such as argon that help address the associated issues such as mitigating oxidisation and managing the explosive nature of the powder properties.Thermal Spraying – improving fatigue wear
Thermal or plasma spraying is a process used to toughen the surface material of implants and therefore improve their fatigue life.
The plasma is produced by an arc which is constricted and burns in BOC-supplied gases such as argon, helium, nitrogen, hydrogen or their mixtures.
Sterilisation
The sterilisation of components for implanting in the human body is critical. BOC supplies Ethylene Oxide, a highly effective steriliant widely used for heat-sensitive tools and components. BOC meets all your needs around the delivery, handling and safe management of ethylene oxide. We work with our customers to optimise production processes, satisfy regulatory compliance and deliver on their environmental agenda.
